Gum Disease Treatment
Gum disease is an inflammatory condition that causes gum tissue to deteriorate over time. Dr. Javadi offers several different treatments for mild to severe periodontal disease, including surgical and non-surgical procedures.
Gum Grafting
Soft tissue grafting is the most effective way to treat receding gums. Successful gum grafting restores the look and feel of your gums while adding a layer of essential protection to the roots of your teeth.
Dental Implants
Gum disease, age, injuries, and certain medical conditions can lead to tooth loss. Dr. Javadi provides dental implants for patients who need single, multiple, or full-mouth teeth replacements.
Laser Periodontics
Dr. Javadi may use advanced laser technology to treat gum disease with extreme precision and efficacy. Laser periodontal treatments include scaling and root planing, periodontal maintenance, crown lengthening, gum grafts, and more.
Teeth Cleaning (Prophylaxis)
Even with good hygiene habits, your teeth need regular deep cleaning to maintain your oral health. Dr. Javadi offers professional cleanings focusing on ridding the gums and teeth of harmful bacteria and plaque buildup.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Periodontist?
“Periodontal” refers to the structures and areas surrounding the teeth. A periodontist is a dentist who treats these areas, including the jawbone and the soft tissue of the gums. Most periodontists specialize in gum disease treatment and dental implants.
Why might I need to visit a Periodontist?
It may be necessary to schedule a visit to a periodontist if you’ve received a gum disease diagnosis from your dentist or if you have receding gums, loose teeth, or other symptoms that lead you or your oral healthcare provider to suspect gum disease. You will also benefit from an appointment with a periodontist like Dr. Javadi if you need dental implants to replace missing or damaged teeth.
What factors contribute to periodontal disease?
Several factors can put you at more of a risk of developing gum disease, including:
- Smoking
- Poor oral hygiene
- Genetic history of gum disease
- Hormonal changes
- Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes
- High stress levels
- Some autoimmune diseases
- Poor nutrition
Is periodontal disease hereditary, or can it be spread?
Certain genetic factors can make you more likely to have oral health issues like gum disease. A condition known as aggressive periodontal disease is often due to a hereditary gene that makes your immune system respond differently to the bacteria that can cause problems with your teeth, gums, or jawbones.
Periodontal disease doesn’t spread from person to person like a cold or the flu; however, constant physical contact (kissing, sharing food or drinks, using the same toothbrush, etc.) with someone with gum disease can expose you to the bacteria that cause the condition. While this doesn’t mean you’ll develop periodontal disease, exposure to this bacteria may put you at a slightly higher risk.
What signs indicate the presence of periodontal disease?
- Red, tender gums
- Bleeding
- Bad breath (halitosis)
- Sensitive teeth or pain when you chew
- Gumline cavities
- Exposed roots of teeth
- Changes in alignment of teeth
- Gum recession
- Teeth that feel loose
- Gaps between your teeth and gums (periodontal pockets)
- Root decay
If I have gum disease, will surgery be necessary?
The treatments Dr. Javadi will recommend depend on the stage of your gum disease. If your gums are still in the beginning stages of gingivitis, Dr. Javadi may perform a deep cleaning procedure known as scaling and root planing. However, once periodontal disease reaches the point of causing gum recession or the infection of roots or jaw bone, you will likely need gum surgery to slow the disease’s effects.
How can I avoid a recurrence of periodontal disease?
Sticking to a good oral hygiene routine is one of the best ways to avoid a gum disease flare-up and slow the condition’s progress. This routine should include brushing your teeth twice daily, flossing, and using mouthwash to prevent bacteria and plaque buildup.
Another way to make sure your gums and teeth stay as healthy as possible is to schedule regular cleaning appointments or periodontal maintenance at Orchid Periodontics & Dental Implants. Dr. Javadi will remove hardened plaque from your teeth and gumline, cleaning below the gumline if needed. Regular professional cleaning will help prevent harmful bacteria from settling in your mouth, leading to additional gum and tooth decay.
Are there options for enhancing the appearance of my gums?
Periodontal disease can lead to gum recession. Your gums may start to feel and look thin, making you self-conscious about your smile. With gum grafting surgery, Dr. Javadi can add soft tissue to the thinning area. This tissue will integrate with the rest of your gums, creating more aesthetic and healthier-looking gums.
Is periodontal treatment painful?
Before your periodontal treatment, Dr. Javadi will use a local anesthetic to numb the area. Though you may still feel some discomfort from specific treatments, you shouldn’t have pain. If you have severe periodontal disease, you may need a stronger anesthetic or a mild sedative to make sure you’re comfortable during your treatment.
After your appointment, your mouth may feel numb for a while. Once the feeling comes back, you may experience some soreness, but this should improve after the first day or two. You can take an over-the-counter pain medication to reduce any pain or discomfort after your treatment.
Will my insurance cover the cost of periodontal treatment?
Many dental insurance policies will cover at least a portion of the costs of periodontal maintenance. If you have dental insurance, check with your insurance provider to see what coverage they offer.
What are periodontal pockets?
As untreated gum disease progresses, your gums will begin to pull away from your teeth, forming gaps between the soft tissue and the roots of your teeth. These gaps are known as periodontal pockets. Once these pockets develop, you’ll need a periodontist like Dr. Javadi to clean them and remove any infected gum tissue. Dr. Javadi may then perform gum grafting surgery to replace gum tissue.
Can gum disease be prevented?
In most cases, you can prevent gum disease with a few simple routines and precautions, including:
- Floss daily to remove food and bacteria between your teeth
- Brush your teeth in the morning and at night to prevent plaque
- Use an antibacterial or antimicrobial mouthwash daily
- Don’t smoke or use tobacco products
- Stick to a diet of nutritious foods
- If you do eat or drink something sweet or overly acidic, brush your teeth or rinse your mouth with water
- Change your toothbrush often (every one to three months)
- Make regular appointments with your dentist for a deep teeth cleaning
If you’ve received a gum disease diagnosis, it’s important to adopt all of the healthy routines listed above. You should also seek regular treatment from a qualified periodontist like Dr. Javadi to maintain the best possible gum health for years to come.
